沖縄島の北部、亜熱帯の豊かな森が続く地域を“やんばる”と呼びます。琉球弧の中でも沖縄島のある中琉球は、約200万年前から大陸と切り離され、独自に進化をとげた固有種の宝庫でしたが、現在は開発などの影響で棲息地が狭まり、やんばるにのみ棲息する生きものも少なくありません。そんなやんばるは2021年、世界自然遺産として登録されました。
